Part Three Days 21-30
Posting every day for 30 days is one of the hardest challenges I have undertaken. Full-time writers find this a ridiculous statement. However, having come from posting a couple of times a week to every day for a month it has been a huge achievement for me.
Throughout the process, I have learnt a lot about my writing. At present, I will never consider taking a challenge on like this again. Although, I am pleased I tried it and accomplished it.
The first twenty days were much easier than the last ten. I think this is because before the last ten days I was not working full time. Trying to complete this challenge, work and have family time has been a struggle. I’m ashamed to say it is my family that has suffered.
The Positives
- I feel I now write better. Some of my posts were rushed and not great but, generally speaking, I can now turn a post round in a much quicker time.
- The posts need less editing as the editing Hemingway does has started to ingrain in my brain.
- Ideas come to me much quicker. Last Sunday a whole post came to me about social media. I wrote it and published it there and then. That would never happen before. It was one of my favourite pieces.
- I have an ideas wallet full of articles that still need writing. These ideas have come about as part of this challenge.
- This challenge gave me the opportunity to experiment with different types of posts.
The Negatives
- At times the constant pressure put me off writing. There was a point this week that I thought I will never write again, once I finish this challenge.
- My family has suffered. I have not spent enough time giving them my full attention.
- My reading has suffered. My favourite author released his new book yesterday and I didn’t have the energy to start it.
- My engagement with others on Medium has reduced. I have missed the conversations and interaction with other writers.
- 30My followers have not increased anywhere as much as I thought they would.
Moving forward.
I am determined to write more often than I was before the challenge. I am aiming at three times a week. Two non-fiction, one piece of fiction.
I read an article on Medium last night that spoke about the benefits of writing on your phone. The first draft of this post is being written on my phone in the 10 minutes I have before my form class comes in.

Finally
If you are considering embarking on this challenge then I have one piece of advice. Have a backup folder of completed drafts for those days when you are too tired to create.
This challenge has been one of the hardest I have participated in. It also has taught me the most about my writing.
At present I’m saying no way will I try it again. Once the dust settles and I have time to reintroduce myself to my family, I might feel better.
How often do you post a week?
Wonderful post! I post few times per week. I was always dreaming about posting every day, but indeed having full time job and family makes me struggle to do so. How do you manage to put everything together?

It was very tough. At the start I was looking for work so not always working which was easier. About half way through I started working again. I’m a teacher so I wrote a lot during breaks and lunch normally on my phone which was tough. I then came home got little legs to bed and edited and published.
It was hard and since then I have given myself a week off to recover but, I have to say it has reaped some excellent rewards with regards to followers.

So you recommend to publish a bit less, but to focus more on interactions with readers?

That would be my tip, yes.

I publish every day, most days. I have certainly had longer runs than 30 days. 🙂
I am always careful to interact with the blogging community too.
Thanks for following my blog, Sam. That is appreciated.
Best wishes, Pete.

Once per week. It is tiring for me to even do that!

As long as you are consistent the growth will still be there just at a slower pace.

I post about books every Wednesday on my blog, and about writing related stuff or updates once on Month on the first Monday. I’m not sure if I should post more or less. I aim to also send out a newsletter every three months.

I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer to how many days to post. The more you post the better your engagement. If just happens slower if you post fewer times.
