I have always been fascinated by poetry and yet never tried to write it. Encouraged by some of the excellent poets in my Facebook Group. I thought it was time to try.
With this thought in mind, I embarked on the task of learning how to write poetry. I searched every available source and found nothing that would help.
I then realised that poetry can be anything that you want. It doesn’t have to fit a format or style, it is a complete expression of feeling.
So here is my first attempt at poetry.
A Friend of Depression
This is a story about living with depression.
Yet this is not a story about living with depression.
It is not me that lives with depression.
Yet it is me that lives with depression.
Depression does not affect me daily.
Yet depression does affect me daily.
I am not the one who struggles with depression.
Yet I am the one who struggles with depression.
Depression is not mine it is my partners.
Yet depression is mine it is my partners.
Search your heart. You will find everything you need to write poetry. You already have a handle on the mechanics of writing. Poetry is more than rhyme and rhythm. When you tap that vein and the blood pours out, you will find your source. You already write with passion. I am confident you will find you poetic voice. The world will stand still as you pluck the rhythms.

I would recommend reading published poetry. There’s so much to be learned from the masters. I love Dorianne Laux and Mary Oliver. Check them out!
