Tips for formatting successful fiction pieces
Styling any post is important. Many writers on Medium use white space in their factual articles. However, you should be using it with all your posts, regardless of genre.
Fiction on Medium
Fiction on Medium is not as popular as factual writing. Many authors struggle to gain views on their work. There are publications that can help with exposure to your work. The Weekly Knob and Bookworm Stories are two I write for regularly. Even with this in mind, we fictional writers are a strong bunch and still produce work for all to read.
I am not suggesting that writing fiction for Medium is pointless, far from it. Fiction is well received on Medium and has a dedicated reading base. Currently, all my fiction pieces have received over 200 views, small in comparison to my factual articles, but still a reasonable amount.
Use White Space
Just because you are writing fiction, does not mean you should forget all the tips on formatting posts. White space is as important in fictional pieces as factual. Just as you use short concise paragraphs in factual articles, you should also use them in fiction writing.
Quotes can also be used indented, as with factual articles.
A piece of fiction could include subheading, think of these as chapter headings. I also like to break my chapters by using a page break between them.
My favourite method, however, to break up text is to use pictures. Don’t just use one at the top, but place them appropriately throughout your writing. This first piece I tried this with is below.
Since then I have included pictures throughout my writing. Breaking text up with white space is as important in fiction writing as fact.
Spend time experimenting with formatting and see what happens to your stats.
