In the last five months, I have grown a following of nearly 350. Not a big amount, some of you might say, but these are 350 genuine followers who will have an interest in what I post. We all have one thing in common we have SEN (special educational needs) children.
The reason I grew a second account, I needed a place to share parenting articles and to interact with other parents. My main account where I have over 2000 followers is for my writing. This account is more personal, about my journey with my amazing side-kick. I also needed a more personal account to share with my family.
Promotion and social media marketing is as big a part of being a writer as producing the articles. Over the years I have tried several different methods, some have worked, others not.
On Medium, older posts appear to make more money when read, than those published that month. Every month when I study my income and statistics, older posts account for on average 50% of my earnings. This is no coincidence, as I promote my old articles as much as I promote my new articles.

If you are a fiction writer, however, many of these techniques may not be effective. One technique I discovered is to create an account for one of your fictional characters.
Many years ago I started writing a vampire novel. At present, it is only halfway through. The lead character is a vampire named Raylon who was part of an experiment. It was this character I used for my Twitter account.
This is a method that would work on Twitter and Instagram. I have only done this on Twitter. Instagram, however, welcomes this approach. There is even an option on a business account to be a fictional character.
