Why as a reader you should be supporting other writers. As a writer, you can share your wisdom through your writing tips and stories of success. As a reader though you hold all the power. Think about your favourite author. You buy their books, pre-order their new editions and recommend their books. You as the reader have the power to make or break an author. The easiest way to thank these authors for their amazing work is by leaving a positive review. How many of you do this for every read? This reader power is also true on Medium. The first change we saw on Medium was for reading time to be converted into payment. This system personally changed the reader in me. I stopped skim reading and started digesting the work of others.
It is that time of the year when everyone looks back on their yearly achievements. Medium is saturated with how I did this year posts. Although these posts will be extensive, they all have their place. As writers by reading how other writers improved their goals can help us. So here is my number one tip for achieving, as well as I did this year. Keep your goals where they can be seen and revisit them regularly. Fiction is notoriously hard to market. However, there are many authors that make a good living from writing fictions. Many platforms are moving towards non-fiction articles. Medium is one platform, that has clearly moved away from fiction and poetry. If you are serious about writing you have to adapt and change. If you are a fiction writer or poet what can you do?
Writing applications can be an expensive business. As this is my side-hustle and I have a family to support, I can’t afford to spend money. Here are the applications that I use. Although many offer a paid version, the reviews are for the free versions. These are my honest views and not sponsored by any company.
A commonplace book is a resource or collection of idea’s, quotes, and observations. Commonplace books are believed to have been around since antiquity. Guides to writing a commonplace book, date back as early as the 17th century. The purpose is to keep hidden gems for use later. The commonplace book does not have to be a notebook but could be a series of index cards. The project is as individual as the writer. It could even be a board on Pinterest if you enjoy technology. I prefer to take notes and then add them later, you might have another method. Again this is down to the individual choice.
As writers, we all appreciate that older posts lose traction as time goes on. There are, however, ways that you can use your old content to reach more followers.
